The future of motorcycle airbags isn't about adding features. It's about making them so practical and intuitive that riders never have to change their habits. That's the design philosophy behind Smart GO

Smart GO is the new Dainese D-air® airbag. Simple, light, and practical, it delivers protection that’s easy to wear and easy to use for everyday riding. The project is built on one clear choice. Instead of adding new features, Dainese removed everything that can get in the way of everyday use, such as weight, complexity, and bulk.

Dainese conceived the motorcycle airbag back in the mid-1990s and introduced it to MotoGP™ in 2007. For more than two decades, its evolution has followed one clear direction: Boosting performance. That meant ever more refined algorithms, faster and more advanced activation systems, wider coverage, and a relentless pursuit of maximum protection.

Today, the technology has matured enough to call for a new perspective. The question is no longer just how to better protect riders in a crash. It’s how to get more and more people to wear an airbag every time they ride.

Even the most advanced motorcycle protection only works when you actually wear it. The best protection isn’t necessarily the one with the most features. It’s the one that becomes part of a rider’s routine, without forcing them to change their habits.

Smart GO: Rethinking the motorcycle airbag

When a technology is new, innovation often means adding more. That means more features, more sophisticated electronics, and more ways to customize. Once it matures, the path changes. Increasingly, innovation means simplifying.

Removing a component isn’t just about cutting costs. It means asking whether that component is truly essential and, above all, whether there’s a smarter way to do the same job. Simplifying is often much harder than adding.

Every element you remove forces a rethink of the entire design, so the final product still delivers at least the same protection standards.

That's exactly the path Dainese took with Smart GO.

A lighter, more comfortable motorcycle airbag

The new D-air® system is designed to stay light and comfortable while you ride, stiffening only on deployment. To make that happen, Dainese completely rethought the heart of the system. The new airbag is made of polyurethane and uses patented Diaphragm technology with a distinctive layered internal structure. On deployment, pressurized air and material tension stiffen the structure. Dainese calls it the Dynamic Arch Effect.

This principle optimizes pressure distribution and airbag behavior to make the protection as effective as possible.

This solution reflects the philosophy behind Smart GO, which was developed to make the technology less intrusive so riders can focus entirely on riding.

With Smart GO, the garment is no longer a vest that houses an airbag system. It's built directly around the protection system. This design philosophy made it possible to cut weight and complexity while keeping the product's core function front and center. Beyond simplifying the system architecture, this approach also makes production more efficient, helping put the technology within reach of more and more riders.

Simple and intuitive by design

Smart GO is designed to give riders a user experience that's as simple and intuitive as possible. To achieve this, the complexity wasn't eliminated. It was shifted into product development.

Beyond the airbag itself, the rest of Smart GO follows the same simplify-first design philosophy. The fit system replaces the traditional zipper closure with practical adjustable buckles, so the garment adapts to a wide range of body types. Power management is handled by an OTG-compatible smartphone or a dedicated power bank, so there's no need for a battery built into the garment.

System management is just as simple and intuitive. Through the dedicated app, riders can register their D-air® device after purchase, switch the system on, activate it, deactivate it, or switch it off, and keep it up to date by installing future firmware versions. The Dainese D-air® App puts all of Smart GO's main functions right on your smartphone.

Of course, simplifying doesn't mean sacrificing protection: Smart GO is designed to deploy in key road crash scenarios: High-sides and low-sides, obstacle collisions, and impacts with other vehicles, including from behind. Smart GO carries the same protective certification as Smart Air: Level 2 for the chest and back.

Smart GO: Simplicity is the future of the motorcycle airbag

The ultimate goal isn't to build a motorcycle airbag with more features than before. The goal is to make this technology easier to wear, more intuitive to use, and more accessible, without losing sight of its core mission: Providing protection when it really counts.

After all, a technology's adoption doesn't depend on performance alone. It depends on how well it can fit into people's lives, either without asking them to change their habits or by making those lives simpler.

And that may well be the next step for motorcycle airbags. The point isn't so much to convince riders that they work as to get them to choose to wear one every time they swing a leg over.

In the end, the best protection is what you wear.
