SMART AIR
Before using SMART Air for the first time, download the D-air® app onto your smartphone or tablet and follow the instructions to register the product. Once you have received the confirmation email from Dainese, you can start using it immediately.
If you do not receive the confirmation email, check your spam folder or contact Dainese technical support.
The D-air® app is available for free on the Google Play Store (Android) and the App Store (iOS). Search for “D-air® Dainese” in your smartphone or tablet store and install the app to easily manage your Smart Air, or click this link to go directly to the relevant page.
You can wear Smart Air either over or under a jacket. To choose the correct size, please see the size guide on the product page, taking your preferred type of use into consideration.
If you wish to wear it under a jacket, we recommend choosing Smart Air Compatible/Airbag Compatible garments, designed with specific volume in the torso and dedicated attachment points to ensure optimal integration. We do not recommend simply choosing a larger size: the sleeves may be too wide and long, which may result in the incorrect positioning of the shoulder and elbow pads.
Yes, there are Dainese suits designed to accommodate Smart Air, thanks to the specially designed volume in the torso to ensure optimal integration and to prevent interference with the aerodynamic hump and other elements of the suit, as well as the dedicated attachment points.
If the leather two-piece suit is not explicitly labeled as Smart Air-ready, you can use it for road riding by wearing it over your suit, provided the suit does not have any features that could restrict the proper expansion of the airbag.
In particular, the suit must not have:
- a rigid aerodynamic hump;
- bulky rigid inserts;
- structures that compress or hinder the inflation of the system.
Smart Air is designed to be worn comfortably over or under technical clothing, but it requires adequate space to expand properly when activated.
To ensure maximum comfort, correct fit and full protection of the system, it is always advisable to check the fit of the garment with care, and consult the dedicated size guide.
No, Smart Air is not compatible with full leather suits because the system requires sufficient space to allow the airbag to expand properly in the event of activation.
One-piece racing suits, especially those equipped with an aerodynamic hump or rigid inserts, can limit the inflation of the system and compromise its protective effect. In addition, the Riding Modes available for Smart Air are not designed for track use and may be unsuitable for racing dynamics, with the risk of unintended activation.
If you mainly use your bike on the track or are looking for an airbag solution that can be integrated into your suit, we recommend exploring the dedicated systems in the D-air® Racing range.
Courtesy of the D-air® airbag system, Smart Air offers advanced protection that is equivalent to seven traditional back protectors, without the weight and rigidity of a hard protector.
You can also wear a back protector and/or chest protector, as long as the size allows for proper use of the device and provides enough space for activation. In this instance, we recommend that you wear SMART Air over a certified garment with protectors on the shoulders and elbows.
SMART Air is designed for both on-road and off-road use, thanks to the two dedicated ROAD and OFFROAD modes available through the D-air® app.
Integrated D-air® technology constantly analyzes the motorcycle rider’s movements and recognizes dangerous situations in real time, adapting the system’s behavior according to the selected riding mode to ensure the highest level of protection in different riding scenarios.
In ROAD mode, Smart Air is designed for daily road use with bikes and scooters. The system is optimized to recognize the key dynamics of a road accident, such as impacts with other vehicles or obstacles, rear-end collisions even when stationary, high-side accidents, and skidding.
In OFFROAD mode, Smart Air is specifically designed for off-road and adventure riding, even when the bike is subject to strong vibrations or riding on rough terrain. It is suitable for dirt trails, gravel, sand, mud, river beds, technical trails and sections with natural obstacles such as bumps, boulders or roots. The dedicated algorithm was developed to handle typical off-road dynamics, including sudden changes in direction, standing on the footpegs, and riding over obstacles at low or higher speeds.
To ensure correct system operation and maximum effectiveness of the protection, it is critical to always select the correct mode of use via the D-air® app before starting to ride.
Smart Air is not designed for specialized racing use or extreme off-road disciplines such as motocross, supercross, trial, freestyle, pit bike, motorally, superenduro, or supermotard.
The system is also not compatible with quads, scooters or other urban micromobility vehicles.
For racing track use, a dedicated system from the D-air® Racing range is recommended.
Yes, Smart Air can also be used with electric motorcycles.
To ensure maximum protection with electric vehicles or bikes characterized by hard-to-detect vibrations, EV Mode can be activated via the D-air® app.
With EV Mode active, the system arms immediately when the device is turned on, with no need to detect motorcycle vibration.
System activation conditions vary according to the mode selected via the D-air® app.
In ROAD mode, Smart Air becomes operational when it detects vibrations from the motorcycle, or once speeds of 10 km/h are exceeded.
With EV Mode active (for electric bikes or vehicles with low vibration), the system arms immediately when the device is turned on. EV Mode can only be used with ROAD riding mode.
In OFFROAD mode, Smart Air automatically arms above 20 km/h.
Once armed, the system constantly monitors riding dynamics and recognizes dangerous situations in real time, in order to activate the airbag when necessary.
The status of the system can be checked at any time via the LED indicator or directly in the D-air® app.
Yes, the Smart Air D-air® system is able to detect the risk of a rear-end collision even when the motorcycle is stationary (for example at a stop sign, in traffic jams or at traffic lights), and immediately activates the airbag to protect the motorcycle rider.
In ROAD mode, the system becomes operational:
- once the vibrations of the motor vehicle have been detected;
- once a speed of 10 km/h has been exceeded.
For electric bikes or vehicles with lower vibration, EV Mode is also available; this can be activated via the D-air® App. In this configuration, Smart Air arms immediately when the device is turned on, providing protection even without detecting vehicle vibrations.
In OFFROAD mode, meanwhile, the system automatically arms itself above 20 km/h and is not designed to offer protection in the event of a rear-end collision from a standstill.
Thanks to the advanced D-air® algorithm, Smart Air immediately deploys the airbag in key danger situations, with different features depending on whether the ROAD or OFFROAD mode is selected.
In ROAD mode:
- Impact against objects or other vehicles
- Collisions even when stationary
- High-side accidents
- Low-side accidents with or without rolling
In OFFROAD mode:
- High-side accidents
- Low-side accidents with or without rolling
- Frontal impacts against both rigid and yielding obstacles, including on rough paths
In OFFROAD mode, the system has been developed to deal with adventure scenarios and technical dirt tracks, including rough terrain, potholes, bumps and natural obstacles.
To transport Smart Air safely, activate Shipping Mode via the D-air® App. In this mode, the system is deactivated to prevent accidental arming or activation during transport.
Before transporting the device, it is also important to ensure the system is turned off properly.
When traveling by air, contact the airline in advance to check the transport arrangements for devices equipped with airbags and a gas generator. Generally, Smart Air must be transported in checked baggage, but procedures may vary depending on the airline and the regulations of the destination country.
When not in use, it is recommended to store and transport Smart Air using the case provided with the product.
Whether to replace or repair your Smart Air depends on the extent of the damage sustained in the fall. Remember that you can reactivate the airbag yourself up to three times by simply replacing the gas generator.
If in doubt, always contact a specialized technician at the authorized D-air® sales outlet nearest you for a professional check.
Smart Air is designed to ensure up to three airbag deployments. After each activation, and having thoroughly inspected the bag before embarking on the replacement procedure, simply replace the gas generator to correctly reset the system and continue to use the device safely.
Before replacement, check for abrasions, unraveled seams, holes, or cuts that could compromise the integrity of the bag and its protective performance.
A special counter available in the D-air® app allows the number of remaining activations to be checked at any time.
After the third time the airbag is activated, the airbag bag must be replaced at an authorized Dainese center in order to continue using Smart Air safely.
When activated, Smart Air remains inflated at the preset pressure for at least 5 seconds, ensuring maximum protection throughout the entire fall. After five seconds, the airbag slowly begins to deflate to allow you to regain mobility and easily remove your garment.
Recharging Smart Air is simple: Turn off the device and connect it to a computer or a regular power outlet using the USB-C cable provided in the box.
A full charge, from 0% to 100%, takes approximately 4 hours and, under optimal conditions, allows Smart Air to guarantee up to 18 hours of continuous use in active mode.
To turn off Smart Air, simply press the on/off button built into the vest.
Once the system is turned off, the LED will show a rapid sequence of red flashes confirming that the device has been turned off.
When Smart Air is not being used, we also recommend:
- Activating Sleeping Mode via the D-air® app in case of prolonged inactivity;
- or setting to Shipping Mode before transporting the device.
To check the status of the system at any time, see the LED indicator or the D-air® app.
Smart Air does not require mandatory periodic inspections. However, to ensure proper operation of the system and preserve its performance over time, it is important to regularly check the integrity of the device and the correct status of the system via the LED or the D-air® app.
After each airbag deployment, the gas generator must be replaced before Smart Air can be used again. After the third deployment, the airbag bag must be replaced at an authorized Dainese center.
In case of falls, impacts, system anomalies, or doubts regarding the condition of the product, we recommend that you contact a Dainese store or a D-air® Road Premium Center for a professional inspection.
To ensure the system remains efficient over time, Dainese also recommends:
- fully recharging the system at least once every two months even when not in use;
- storing Smart Air in a dry and ventilated place;
- avoiding prolonged exposure to heat sources or extreme temperatures.
You can find the nearest authorized center using the store locator on the official Dainese website.
For routine cleaning, use a damp cloth and gently rub it over the surface of the vest. Avoid using harsh detergents, machine washing or immersion in water, to preserve the integrity of the system.
Smart Air is covered by official warranty. The duration varies according to your country’s existing legislation. We recommend that you check the specific conditions for your area.

Smart Air weighs approximately 1.48 kg, lower than the average motorcycle jacket with certified hard protectors, therefore ensuring greater lightness and comfort.
Smart Air is a ventilated garment, designed to be as light and imperceptible as possible. Its fabric is water-repellent but not waterproof, so it does not offer protection from the rain.
In case of rain, and if the D-AIR SMART is integrated into a NON-waterproof garment, protect the system with a rain jacket worn over the garment itself.
Smart Jacket is made of certified abrasion-resistant and tear-resistant fabric. In the event of a slide, both the material and the D-air® airbag offer protection against abrasions and scratches in the areas covered by the vest, ensuring greater safety.
Smart Air is a unisex product, designed to comfortably fit different body types owing to its ergonomic and adjustable design.
You can activate OFFROAD mode directly through the D-air® app.
To change the Riding Mode, the system updates the operating parameters, replacing the previous ones. Once the procedure is complete, Smart Air will be optimized for off-road use.
EV Mode (Electric Vehicle Mode) is a feature dedicated to electric scooters or motorbikes and motorbikes with reduced vibration. When activated, the device does not need to detect vehicle vibration to arm, and is therefore ready to offer protection even while riding electric vehicles.
EV Mode can be activated directly through the D-air® app and is only available in ROAD mode.
Shipping Mode is designed for transporting the device and prevents accidental powering on of the system.
Sleeping Mode, meanwhile, is ideal when Smart Air is not in use for an extended period, further reducing power consumption.
When inflated, Smart Air protects the back and chest.
The gas generator must be disposed of as ferrous waste at an authorized collection center and in accordance with the regulations of your country.
After downloading the D-air® app, connect the device correctly by following the wizard, and charge the battery. Ensure that Smart Air is always worn correctly, in conjunction with a PPE-certified garment.
Close the center zipper and the button that acts as a switch: the system will automatically turn on.
When it is turned on, the LED interface will show a red, green, and blue sequence of lights to confirm that the device is working properly. Next, the LEDs will indicate the remaining battery charge level:
- 5 green flashes: charged to between 100% and 50%
- 5 yellow flashes: charged to between 50% and 15%
- 5 red flashes: charged to between 15% and 0%
If the system is set to ROAD mode, the LED will turn steady blue after the battery level indication: the device is working correctly, but is not yet armed or protective.
If the system is set to OFFROAD mode, the LED will initially turn flashing blue, indicating that the device is waiting for a GPS signal. Once the signal is received, the LED will turn steady blue: again, the system is working correctly, but not yet armed or protective.
Smart Air is ready for use when the LED slowly flashes green: this signifies that the system is armed and protective.
When the battery level is critically low, the LED indicates this status with a yellow flash every four green flashes.

D-AIR® RACING
Certainly! The D-air® Racing system can be replaced following deployment. For more informations and instructions contact us here
No, D-air® Racing was designed exclusively for use on the track. In reality, falls that occur on the track are very different from those which happen on the road.
Yes. All the performance characteristics of D-air® Racing have been verified and certified by the TÜV SÜD automotive division, an organisation which has vast technological expertise in the protection and airbag technology system sector. D-air® Racing successfully passed the tests set by EN 1621.1, EN 1621.2 and EN 1621.4. The system also underwent an additional series of very severe tests aimed at verifying its reliability in hostile weather conditions such as extreme heat or in the presence of strong electromagnetic interference to name but a few.
Another very important test was the safety one which demonstrated that even if the D-air® Racing system deployed not following a fall, it did not interfere with the rider's ability to keep control of the bike.
D-air® Racing uses very sophisticated deployment technology that is much more intelligent than a simple piece of wire. Its sophisticated deployment algorithm lets it distinguish between different types of fall and decide whether or not and how to intervene. If the dynamics of a fall do not justify deployment, the system will not activate so as to avoid wasting money on testing and replacing.
To order a D-air® Racing suit, contact your nearest authorised Dainese-D-air® Racing store. You can also avail of the made-to-measure service and/or colour changes and/or have wording or sponsors' names or logos added. For further information about costs and delivery times, contact your dealer.
The data acquisition software for the D-air® Racing suit can be downloaded from the 2D website via this link:
http://2d-datarecording.com/en/produkte/custom-packs-1/dainese-d-air
This software can be download only online and allows viewing the telemetry and all the data relating to track performance.
Once the software is installed on the PC, the data can be downloaded from the suit using a USB cable. The complete software user’s manual can be downloaded from the same 2D website via the above-mentioned link.
This software is related only to the acquisition of data from the suit to the PC. The firmware managing the airbag activation has been installed directly in the suit and can be updated only by Dainese.
The firmware installed in the suit that manages the airbag activation is always sold with the latest available version and if the suit is returned to Dainese for repair or analysis, the latest version is installed automatically if needed.
The firmware cannot be updated by the user or the reseller but only by Dainese. All firmware versions issued by Dainese are anyway verified and functional, even if the firmware installed is not the latest version.
Dainese products are designed, tested and certified to guarantee that the whole item and any fabric/leather components along with the active and passive protection systems protect the wearer as best as humanly possible.
Dainese have carried out hundreds of safety tests on D-air® garments of every size and obtained TÜV Süd approval for the protection provided.
An airbag is only one part of a protection system: the air pressure inside the airbag on deployment varies from 1.25 to 1.74 bar from the Street version to the Racing version depending on the various configuration of the D-air® garments.
With the D-air® system, the weight of the suit varies from about 6.5 Kg for a size 44 up to 9 Kg for a size 60.
"Cold technology" is a gas injection system that offers considerable benefits in terms of inflation speed, volumes attained and product safety in comparison with other previous technologies (Pyrotechnic Inflater / Hybrid Pyrotechnic / Heated Gas) and was therefore adopted by car manufacturers for airbags.
It is known as "cold technology" because the gas to be compressed and injected must be cooled to reach its liquid form: once the airbag is deployed, the gas is allowed to escape and expands to its gaseous state.

Smart Jacket offers outstanding protection due to its D-air® airbag system, equivalent to that of seven back protectors, without the bulk and stiffness of hardshell protective gear. However, if you prefer to wear additional protection such as chest or back protectors, you can do so without any issues.
Yes, you can safely wear a backpack over Smart Jacket.
We only recommend that you be mindful about the objects in the backpack and check that there are no sharp or rigid elements that may compromise the integrity of the airbag in the event of activation.
Smart Jacket is specifically designed for road use with motorcycles and scooters. The control unit of the D-air® system analyzes and monitors what is happening 1000 times per second and autonomously recognizes dangerous situations for a rider during daily road riding in real time.
However, it is not suitable for an exclusive use on the track, where a system with dedicated parameters is preferable (for example D-air® Racing), nor in off-road riding mode.
Smart Jacket is discouraged for off-road riding or on trails with frequent jumps, strong vibrations and intense jolting. In these conditions the D-air® system may mistakenly interpret strong accelerations and sudden movements as dangerous situations and inadvertently activate the airbag.
Yes, Smart Jacket can also be used with electric motorcycles. In this case, the D-air® system activates automatically as soon as the motorcycle exceeds a speed of 10 km/h, guaranteeing you maximum protection on every journey.
The Smart Jacket system automatically becomes operational when you exceed 10 km/h. Below this speed, the system remains in standby mode.
Yes, the Smart Jacket D-air® system is able to recognize the risk of a rear-end collision when the motorcycle is stationary (for example at a stop sign or at traffic lights), and immediately activate the airbag to protect the motorcycle rider.
Please note:
With conventional motorcycles, the airbag system detects danger and activates if it exceeds 10 km/h and remains operational even when the motorcycle is stationary, sensing the engine vibrations. In the case of an electric motorcycle, on the other hand, Smart Jacket’s D-air® system becomes operational only after exceeding a speed of 10 km/h.
Owing to the sophisticated D-air® algorithm, Smart Jacket immediately activates the airbag in the following situations:
- Impact or collision with objects or vehicles.
- Sliding (with or without rolling).
- High side of motorcycle rider.
- Rear-end collision with stationary motorcycle (at stop sign, traffic lights, intersections, queues).
It means that the airbag ensures timely and effective protection in any road hazard scenario.
To transport Smart Jacket safely, you need to activate Shipping Modefrom the D-air® software. In the case of air travel, we recommend that you contact the airline in advance to check the necessary documentation and transport arrangements for airbag devices. It will probably need to be carried in your checked luggage.
The need to replace or repair Smart Jacket depends on the extent of the damage sustained as a result of the fall. To assess the damage, and if in doubt, contact a specialized Dainese technician at the authorized D-air® sales outlet nearest you.
After one/each airbag activation, it is necessary to replace the bag at a Dainese sales outlet/authorized center, or you can purchase the service online.
When activated, the Smart Jacket airbag remains inflated at maximum pressure for more than/approximately five seconds, ensuring maximum protection throughout the entire fall. After the five seconds, the airbag pressure begins to decrease until it is completely deflated, allowing you to regain mobility and remove the jacket if required.
Recharging Smart Jacket is simple: Turn off the device and connect it to a computer or a regular power outlet with the USB-C cable provided in the box. A full charge (from 0 to 100%) takes approximately four hours and allows Smart Jacket to provide over 26 hours of continuous use in active mode.
To turn off Smart Jacket, simply unfasten the vest fastening buttons. We recommend you verify that the system is actually off using the LED indicator.
Dainese recommends servicing the D-Air system after the first three years from the date of purchase. The inspection is free of charge and can be carried out directly at one of our Dainese stores or D-Air Premium Center retailers. You can find the nearest store at the following link – we suggest selecting the "D-Air Premium Center" filter among the available services: Store Locator. We recommend calling the store before your visit.
If any repairs are needed, you will be provided with a cost estimate.
Once you have registered your Smart Jacket after purchase, you will receive periodic email communications telling you when you need to update the software.
For routine Smart Jacket cleaning, use a damp cloth, gently rubbing it over the surface of the vest. Avoid using harsh detergents, machine washing or immersion in water, to preserve the integrity of the system.
Smart Jacket is covered by official warranty. The duration varies according to your country’s existing legislation.
We recommend that you check the specific conditions for your area.
