Rocca notches up first victory! Third place for Putzer

20 January 2003 | News

Giorgio Rocca ended his run of bad luck to finish at the top of the winner’s rostrum! After three second places and one third, Rocca claimed his first World Cup win as he stormed home in the Special Slalom in Wengen, Switzerland. Leading at the end of the first leg, he fought off stiff competition in the next from Japan’s Sasaki, who came second ahead of another Dainese athlete, Croatia’s Ivica Kostelic, who remains firmly perched at the top of the specialities rankings. Rocca’s win has earned Italy its first gold in the Special Slalom since January 2000, ending a three-year drought.
Women. In Cortina, Karen Putzer continued her excellent form in this season’s World Cup by stepping onto the winner’s rostrum once again. Lying second at the end of the first leg, Karen had to give way to the blistering pace of Kostelic, initially in fourteenth, and to the Swede Paerson, who won this Italian stage of the women’s Giant Slalom. Putzer now lies in second place in the overall World Cup rankings, but is in first place in the Giant Slalom.
