SVINDAL FOR SILVER, RIESCH FOR GOLD!

2/19/2010

We said that the Vancouver slope would have surprises in store for us, and that is exactly what happened. Naturally, Aksel Lund Svindal is the 2009 World Champion, so it is not a surprise to see him on the podium of the most important competitions, but perhaps, after a season like this one, such a remarkable result really was not expected. Yet the Dave Murray slope gave a twist to the tale... Silver medal in the Olympic downhill, for just 7 hundredths of a second behind an equally surprising Didier Defago. A magnificent accomplishment, a fantastic debut, the first Olympic medal after winning the overall World Cup and several medals at the World Championships.
Aksel found company on 17 February with Maria Riesch, the new Olympic Winter Supercombo Champion. This speciality, with a downhill race and then a special slalom on the same day, is the epitome of skiing versatility, a characteristic that only few skiers can claim in the world, and especially in recent years. A really great come back after her eighth place in the complicated downhill on Wednesday.
As with Aksel, even Maria received her first Olympic Medal of her career, and that means she now has all the credentials to become part of skiing history.
Then finally it is right to mention the eighth place obtained by Johanna Schnarf (Italy) and 13th place by the young world junior champion, Mona Loeseth (Norway).
