This was a less than satisfying week for Valentino Rossi and the other Dainese World Motorcycle Championship racers.
After his literally perfect time trials the day before, the Doctor was betrayed during the race by his tires. The sudden loss of grip from the tread on his M1 obliged the Tavullia Champ to race defensively against a series of adversaries who finally left him in highly unusual (for Val) 10th place. Promising Australian racer Chris Vermeulen also had a bad day: the fastest laps he began turning in towards the end of the race were not enough to make up for his spill at the beginning.
Things went far better for Jorge Lorenzo in the 250 cc class, where the Spanish ace took part in a fantastic duel right from the start with Andrea Dovizioso, who finally beat him to the finish line by a hair and kept him from his third straight victory at the start of the season. Jorge’s 2nd place spot provided enough points to keep a solid lead over his Italian contender in the overall standings.
