Highly unusual race: after the terrible spills of Lorenzo and Stoner in the official warm-up laps, it looked like it would be easy for Val to break into the lead ahead of everyone else. Many people thought that would happen. Instead, it happened to be one of Dani Pedrosa’s magic days: his Honda looked super-light and super-powerful, the best bike on the track, and Dani is accustomed to dominating, even if he hadn’t won a race since last year in Barcelona.
The race was a good one, though: equilibrated and convincing. Rossi tried, even if his setting wasn’t perfect. Lorenzo tried too, even if his shoulder/feet setting was nowhere near perfect. These three stepped up to the podium with just a mere few tenths of second between them. Rossi’s attempt to pass Pedrosa on the final curve could even have turned out differently had The Doctor wanted to play a little dirty. But Valentino’s many values include elegance and fairplay and so he gave up and brought home a second-place finish that’s worth its weight in gold on his way to his ninth world championship.
This season’s competition looks pretty balanced. Pedrosa is the fourth winner in eight races. Even the bikes appear to be more evenly matched than before. Too bad that Stoner still hasn’t come into form. It was also a pity that Dovizioso fell for the second time in a row. But the 1st Commandment reads loud and clear: don’t fall. The big thing isn’t to win but to keep scoring points.
A word on the tires: Here in Laguna Seca a double mix would have come in handy but Bridgestone hadn’t planned on the contingency. Hence the spills on the right-hand bends that were so disastrous for Lorenzo and Stoner. Now with pressure from the racers themselves, the system is going to change and it would be about time. Safety is the most important thing of all.

PEDROSA PER UN NULLA SULLA LAGUNA

Gara atipica: dopo i terribili voli di Lorenzo e Stoner nelle prove ufficiali, pareva dovesse diventar facile per Vale fuggire al comando e andarsene solo. In molto pensavano che sarebe andata così, Invece è spuntato Dani Pedrosa in una delle sue giornate speciali: la Honda pareva leggera e potentissima, la migliore dele MotoGP; e lui abituato a dominare. Invece lo spagnolo non vinceva da Barcelona 2008, un anno fa.
Bella corsa comunque, equilibrata e avvincente. Rossi ci ha provato anche se non era del tutto a posto con il setting, Lorenzo ci ha provato anche se non era a posto per niente con spalla e piede. E sul podio sono saliti nell'ordine e divisi da pochi decim i di secondo. Anzi, il tentativo di Rossi su Pedrosa, all'ultima curva, poteva anche avere un esito diverso. Bastava decidere di giocare un po' sporco. Ma Valentino ha l'eleganza e la sportività tra i suoi valori, e così ha giustamente lasciato perdere:questo è un secondo posto d'oro per la caccia al nono titolo mondiale.
Certo che è un campionato equilibrato. Pedrosa è il quarto vincitore in otto gare. E le moto si equivalgono più che in passato. Peccato per Stoner che non è ancora a posto. Peccato anche per Dovizioso che cade per la seconda volta di seguito. Ma il comandamento è noto: primo, non cadere. I punti sono la priorità.
Qualche considerazione sulle gomme. Qui a Laguna sarebbero servite quelle a doppia mescola e la Bridgetone non le aveva programmate. Da qui le cadute in curva a destra, rovinose per Lorenzo e Stoner. Ora, su pressione dei piloti, si prova a cambiare s istema e sarebbe opportuno farlo: la sicurezza prima di tutto.

The epic race is approaching, the Duel with a capital D. The premise is pure spectacle: Rossi, Lorenzo, Stoner, and maybe even a Honda or two. The Laguna Seca track is slow and technical but welcomes the brave. Spend Sunday night in front of the tv, but only if your blood pressure is under control!

La gara epica si avvicina, quella del Duello con la maiuscola. E le premesse sono spettacolari: Rossi, Lorenzo, Stoner, magari anche una Honda. La pista è lenta e tecnica, spazio a tutti i coraggiosi. Domenica sera allora davanti alla tivù, se avete le coronarie in ordine!
