What a show on that track! It’s a pity that at Laguna Seca, yesterday for the ninth race of the World Championship, each rider was going around on one’s own except a few short closer phases. That’s a modern Moto GP problem: each one has his own pace, every individual race is regular (few exceptions), rarely the rhythms cross over and produce duels.
Jorge triumphed, sixth wins out of nine. Without Pedrosa’s fall, who had eight tenth’s advantage, would Lorenzo have been able to overtake his compatriot? He thinks so, I think so, but it would have been nice to verify that because when you’re riding at those rhythms the mistake can happen. Dani lost his nerves, we can tell, and definitely he loses his nerves more than Lorenzo does. We have to say that. Then Honda is really powerful, the best in acceleration, but while entering the curves it’s not so fluid and it’s easy to lose control. Yamaha is more balanced, especially the No. 99, perfect in the States as well.
Valentino did not have a neutral and precise bike. The cause is to be find in the adjustments, even if the team and the rider tried hard to find the right one not only in function of the track but only and above all to soothe Rossi’s physical effort on the stressing rollercoaster at Laguna. Bitter surprise for the World Champion: the American track showed to be more demanding than Sachs for a rider like him still far from his best condition and still with many fears. At the start he felt vulnerable and he did not dare, then he found a good rhythm and towards the end he even got better succeeding in overtaking Dovizioso and getting on the podium when very few were still hoping for that. Away from the others, but third. And it’s a beautiful satisfaction.
Someone thought that the comeback of No. 46 was premature. The surveys agreed. There were critics as well. But the facts say that Vale chose well, as usual: a convalescence at home would have depressed him, much better it would have been regain confidence while in competition, maybe being a bit more cautious. He got a third and a fourth place, 29 points in total, he fast regained a good condition and in Brno – just in the middle of the Championship – will be back convinced that he can win. Everything under control.
Less controlled is Marco Simoncelli who once again gave all and then he fell. It’s the way of the Greatest: you dare and you fall but you try again the next race and the important thing is not to get hurt. History will reward the brave Supersic. And Stoner? He deserves an A as the entire podium. I think he’s the old Stoner again, Stoner of the best moments. Good to watch, aggressive and clean. But he just finds the best Lorenzo ever, that’s all.

Che spettacolo quella pista! Peccato che a Laguna Seca, domenica per la nona prova del mondiale, ogni pilota se ne andava in giro per conto proprio, salvo qualche breve fase ravvicinata. E’ questo il guaio della MotoGp moderna: ciascuno ha il suo passo, ogni gara individuale è regolare (poche le eccezioni), raramente i ritmi si incrociano e producono duelli.

Jorge ha trionfato, sesta vittoria su nove partenze. Senza la caduta di Pedrosa, che aveva otto decimi di vantaggio, sarebbe riuscito Lorenzo a riprendere il connazionale? Lui pensa di sì, io penso di sì, però sarebbe stato bello verificarlo davvero, perché quando si viaggia a quei ritmi l’errore può capitare a rotazione. Dani ha ceduto di nervi, si può dire, e certo cede più spesso del Lorenzo di oggi. Questo va detto. Poi la Honda è potentissima, la migliore in accelerazione, ma in ingresso di curva non è ancora fluida ed è facile perderne il controllo. Più equilibrata la Yamaha, soprattutto la numero 99, perfetta anche negli States.

Valentino non aveva una moto così neutra e precisa. La causa è nelle regolazioni, cercate dal team e dal pilota non soltanto in funzione della pista ma anche e soprattutto per alleviare la fatica fisica di Rossi sui toboga stressanti di Laguna. Amara sorpresa, per il campione del mondo: la pista è risultata più impegnativa del Sachs, per un pilota come lui ancora lontano dalla forma e con tanti timori. Al via si è sentito vulnerabile e non ha osato; poi ha trovato un buon ritmo, e addirittura nel finale è migliorato ancora, riuscendo a passare Dovizioso e a centrare il podio quando ormai pochissimi ci speravano ancora. A distanza, ma terzo. Ed è una bellissima soddisfazione.

Qualcuno pensava che il rientro del 46 fosse prematuro. I sondaggi lo sostenevano. Le critiche non sono mancate. Ma i fatti dicono che Vale non è un pollo e ha scelto bene, come al solito: una convalescenza a casa lo avrebbe depresso, molto meglio riprendere confidenza in gara, magari tenendo il freno a mano leggermente tirato. Ha intascato un terzo e un quarto posto, 29 punti in totale,  ha recuperato più in fretta la forma, e a Brno –proprio a metà campionato- si ripresenterà convinto di poter vincere. Tutto sotto controllo.

Meno controllato Marco Simoncelli, che ancora una volta ha dato tutto ed è scivolato. E’ il percorso dei grandi: si osa e si cade, ma ci si prova ancora la gara dopo e l’importante è non farsi male. La storia premierà il coraggioso SuperSic. E Stoner? Da dieci anche lui, è il voto che merita il podio tutto. Io credo che si sia ritrovato, che sia lo Stoner dei momenti migliori. Bello da vedere, aggressivo e pulito. Ma incrocia il miglior Lorenzo di sempre, tutto qui.

Sulla pista più affascinante del campionato, con il cavatappi dei sorpassi più acrobatici. E non corrono soltanto quei quattro…
