Boys and girls, what a day! Valentino Rossi wins his one-hundredth race! The stats say he’s raced in 217 ‘til now, and that gives him a magical 46.05 winning percentage. Val’s number is forty-six. If that’s not more than a mysterious coincidence, what is?
Val also wants us to remember that Assen is his 40th win astride a Yamaha. He also wanted to thank both his racetrack team and the people he works with in Japan. Val has a great relationship with the people at Yamaha; they’re all real friends. As he thanked one and all - the right thing to do on a historical occasion like this one - Val expressed his gratitude to everyone who has supported him throughout his career: family and friends above all. Although the list would have been too long to name everyone, we had the impression that he was thanking us as well: Dainese, AGV, all of us who work with him, especially those on the MotoGP racetracks who have watched and helped him grow firsthand.
And we’d like to thank you, Valentino, for everything you do, everything you say, and especially for the way you say it!
The race was fast without any stories to tell: our No. 46 maintained an infernal pace. Only Jorge Lorenzo gave the idea – halfway through the race – that he might be able to shave a tenth of a second or two off Val’s lead. But then his tires began giving out, Val’s grip stayed firm, and the result was never in doubt. Yamaha confirmed its reputation for excellence and Lorenzo is still Val’s most consistent rival, impressing one and all with his speed and control. His younger age (22 against Val’s 30) will have its effect in the end, but not just yet. Rossi can only hope that things will remain the same for a few more seasons to come.
Casey Stoner had stomach problems and had to fight hard to finish third far behind. Andrea Dovizioso followed him for a long time and might have been able to pass but for a fall near the end. Like Pedrosa. Honda had difficulties. Further behind, Nicky Hayden did well on the second Ducati. Loris Capirossi was also doing well until Toni Elias pushed him off track in the final chicane.
The revenge of Supersic that looked ready to arrive failed to materialize in the 250 cc category. Marco tried. At a certain point he was even in the lead but a probably defective tire burst and slowed him down considerably. The race offered thrills from the first to the last lap, when Bautista violently bumped Aoyama from behind. The damage to the Spaniard’s bike precluded him from finishing the race; the Japanese racer was luckier and won in the end. In the battle for second, Barbera knocked our racer Gilera out of action, but the jury kept quiet.
Lady Luck does not appear to be riding on Marco Simoncelli’s side this year. Far from it! She appears to be riding against him. Marco can still win the title however; he’s not that far behind. Now that he’s made his plans for the near future (2010 in MotoGP with Gresini and Honda!), he’ll be able to concentrate on winning in the 250 cc category.
Last but not least, the SBK race was run in Donington. Race 1 saw Biaggi battle Spies for success and finish second. Well done, Max! Then he gave his all again in Race 2 until the moment that he fell.

ROSSI C'E'...NTO VOLTE!!

Ragazzi, che giornata! Valentino Rossi ha conquistato la vittoria numero 100! E le statistiche dicono che, avendo lui disputato finora 217 gare, la sua percentuale di successo è pari al 46,05 per cento… Quarantasei: c’è della cabala in questa storia.
Vale ha tenuto a ricordare che questo di Assen è anche il suo quarantesimo successo in sella alla Yamaha. E ha voluto ringraziare tutti gli uomini della squadra, e anche quelli che sono in Giappone, perché con la gente Yamaha si trova a meraviglia, tra amici veri. Già che era in tema di ringraziamenti –ed era giusto, in una giornata storica come questa- il nostro eroe ha voluto ricordare anche quelli che lo hanno sostenuto nella carriera: famiglia e amici in testa. Nomi non ne ha fatti, la lista sarebbe stata lunga, ma abbiamo la presunzione di esserci anche noi: Dainese, AGV, tutti noi che ci lavoriamo e in particolare quelli che vanno sulle piste del mondiale ad assisterlo da vicino e a fare evoluzione.
Bravo Valentino: per quello che fai, per quello che dici e per come lo dici!
La gara è stata velocissima però senza storia: il numero 46 ha tenuto un ritmo infernale. Soltanto Jorge ha dato l’impressione, a metà distanza, di poter recuperare qualche decimo. Ma poi le sue gomme usurate e soprattutto la tenacia di Vale, hanno bloccato il risultato. La Yamaha si conferma moto eccellente e Lorenzo resta il più consistente dei rivali, anche qui ha fatto impressione per velocità e tenuta: e i suoi otto anni in meno all’anagrafe (22 contro 30 di Rossi) alla fine peseranno. Ma per ora no. E Rossi si augura che non cambi nulla per qualche stagione ancora…
Casey purtroppo soffriva di stomaco e ha fatto molta fatica a concludere terzo a distanza, Dovizioso lo ha inseguito a lungo e forse poteva farcela, ma ha perso il podio per una scivolata. Come Pedrosa. Honda in difficoltà. Più indietro, bravino Hayden con la seconda Ducati e bene Capirossi fino a che Elias lo ha portato fuori pista nell’ultima chicane.
In duecentocinquanta non c’è stata la pronta riscossa di Supersic, quella che sembrava nell’aria. Marco ci ha provato, è andato anche in testa ma una gomma probabilmente difettosa lo ha rallentato vistosamente. Brivido all’inizio dell’ultimo giro, quando Bautista ha tamponato violentemente Aoyama che lo precedeva. Lo spagnolo non ha potuto concludere, la moto distrutta; il nipponico ha avuto fortuna ed ha vinto. Dietro, nella battaglia per il secondo posto, Barbera ha portato fuori pista il nostro pilota Gilera. Ma la giuria non ha avuto nulla da eccepire.
Simoncelli non ha la fortuna dalla sua, quest’anno. Sembra che tutto gli remi contro. Ma può ancora farcela, il suo distacco non è abissale. Ed ora che ha definito il suo futuro immediato (2010 in MotoGP con Gresini e la Honda!) potrà concentrarsi sul recupero.
Per concludere, nota da Donington dove domenica ha corso la SBK. Biaggi, in gara 1, ha battagliato con Spies per il successo ed ha chiuso secondo. Bravo Max! Poi ha dato tutto anche in gara 2, fino alla scivolata.
