Great affection from the audience, beautiful signs from the colleagues on the grid, Vale's brilliant phone call from the hospital: the Sunday at Mugello had is centre of gravity in Rossi even if Number 46 could not be there. Because it's clear: Valentino is a legend and we count on the fact that he will soon be back, much earlier than the 4 or 5 months forecast by Doctor Buzzi who operated him.
At the end of July, I guess, we might see him at Laguna Seca. But in the meantime he will be obliged to watch many GPs on TV from home. How will he have reacted to Jorge Lorenzo's gesture? Will he have liked the yellow t-shirt worn by his team mate on the podium of Italy Gp? The Spanish kid was maybe sincere, we don't have any reasons to doubt it, but Mum Stefania - who watched the race with his 9-time World Champion son - preferred to avoid the issue when asked...
In the meanwhile, Pedrosa got back to victory for the first time this year. Lorenzo was not at his best and he was content with the second place. Stoner couldn't get away from his problems and couldn't reach the podium. Dovizioso's race was beautiful, he finished third but quite near to the second one, while Melandri's race - constantly duelling with Stoner and De Puniet - was above of all expectancy. On the contary, Supersic Simoncelli started well, he was in the wake of Hayden but then he was late in an overtaking and was obliged to go out on the gravel losing all positions and ending at the ninth place.
A very big compliment to Andrea Iannone and to Simone Corsi: the former dominated Moto2 with the class of a true champion, the latter reached the podium after a tremendous recovery. Maybe those two are the next Italian protagonists of MotoGP. Never say never.
In any case, the tyre issue remains open. Rossi fell while entering a bend with closed gas, like Stoner or Spies or many others did. Bridgstone, the only supplier, builds very good tyres but with a clear lack: it takes a little for the tyre to get colder and lose grip. Many champions falling like chickens: this is not acceptable!
For the records, according to my sources Vale was thrown out of his motorbike while he was riding "only" at 168 km/h in a bend of 180 km/h: Yamaha telemetry confirms it; the air-bag activated immediately after, when the speed of the rider decreased of only 10 km/h. It seems possible that the bad fracture exposed to tibia and fibula of his right leg was caused by the impact with the ground due to the particularly unfavourable angle of incidence or for the effect of the energy gained during the flight and discharged on the ground with great violence.

Grande l’affetto del pubblico, belli i cartelli dei tanti colleghi sulla griglia, brillante la telefonata di Vale dall’ospedale. La domenica del Mugello ha avuto il suo baricentro in Rossi anche se il 46 non poteva esserci. Perché è chiaro: Valentino è un mito e contiamo che tornerà presto a correre, molto prima dei 4 o 5 mesi buttati lì con la tempistica ospedaliera dal professor Buzzi che lo ha operato. A fine luglio, è la mia sensazione, potremmo ritrovarlo al via di Laguna Seca. Ma intanto dovrà vedere tanti Gp da casa, alla televisione, e chissà con quali sofferenze. Come avrà reagito al gesto di Jorge Lorenzo? Gli sarà piaciuta quella maglia gialla addosso al compagno di team sul podio del GP d’Italia? Lo spagnolo era magari sincero, noi tifosi non abbiamo motivo di dubitarne, però mamma Stefania (che la gara l’ha vista con il figliolo nove volte campione del mondo) alla domanda diretta ha preferito glissare…
Intanto, Pedrosa torna alla vittoria per la prima volta quest’anno, Lorenzo non è perfettamente in palla e si accontenta, Stoner non esce dai suoi misteriosi problemi ed è giù dal podio. Bella invece la corsa di Andrea Dovizioso, terzo ma vicino al secondo, e sopra ogni speranza anche quella di Melandri che ha duellato tutta la gara con Stoner e De Puniet. Supersic Simoncelli, invece, era partito bene, era nella scia di Hayden, ma poi si è trovato in ritardo in un sorpasso ed è stato costretto all’uscita nella ghiaia perdendo tutte le posizioni possibili e chiudendo al nono posto.
Un complimento grosso come una casa ad Andrea Iannone e a Simone Corsi: il primo ha dominato la Moto2 con la classe di un vero campione, il secondo è salito sul podio dopo una formidabile rimonta. Che siano loro due i prossimi protagonisti italiani della MotoGP. Mai dire mai.
Però resta aperta la questione gomme. Rossi è caduto in ingresso di curva a gas chiuso, come Stoner, come Spies, Espargaro e tanti altri. Bridgestone, il fornitore unico, costruisce ottime gomme però con un evidente difetto: basta pochissimo perché scendano di temperatura e tengano niente. Tanti campioni che cadono come polli: non è una cosa accettabile.
Per la cronaca, e secondo le mie fonti, Vale è stato sbalzato dalla sua moto quando viaggiava “solo” a 168 orari in una curva da 180: lo dice la registrazione della telemetria Yamaha; l’air-bag si è attivato subito dopo, quando la velocità del pilota in volo era calata di soli 10 chilometri orari. Sembra probabile che la brutta frattura esposta a tibia e pérone della sua gamba destra sia stata provocata dall’impatto con il terreno: a causa dell’angolo di incidenza particolarmente sfavorevole o per effetto dell’energia accumulata nel volo e scaricata a terra con particolare violenza.
