EL MATADOR

13 June 2005 | News

Valentino Rossi's solitary ascent to the top of the Motorcycle GP standings continues unimpeded.
As so often happened this year, on Sunday, June 12, Doctor Rossi repeated the trick on the Montmelò track in Spain by coming up with spectacular final three laps and passing rival Sete Gibernau who had dominated the pack so far.
Rossi let the Spaniard hold the lead for the entire race but changed gear as the finish line approached and set a new record for the final lap, in this way breaking his own previous personal record of five wins in six races.
Another racer who wouldn't look out of place in the center of an arena is Dani Pedrosa, the unquestioned dominator of the 250 cc Class race in front of 105,000 screaming fans who can't wait for their hero to move up to the highest GP category.
In the same class, Simone Corsi finished 5th after a close call while passing Hector Barberà on the straightaway. But if the Roman rider was able to stay in the saddle even after contact at 200 km/hour, Jorge Lorenzo was not as lucky after bumping into Alex De Angelis and wound up spilling into the sand with a broken collarbone that might jeopardize his entire season.
In the 125 cc Class, Marco Simoncelli came back into the limelight despite getting off to a terrible start - and that's putting it mildly. From 16th place, SuperPippo fought his way back up to a 2nd place final time and a result that projects him into 5th place in the standings with 72 points just behind his fellow Dainese team-mate Lüthi (83) who's just one point away from 1325 cc Class leader Mattia Pasini.
The D-Mobile set up along the Montmelò racetrack provided the setting for the official presentation of the Dainese-Fiat jacket developed through the intuition of Hydrogen, a leading name in high-segment fashion co-branding. Fiat Btl Marketing Director Lapo Elkann was on hand as guest of honour and testimonial.
Stay tuned to the Dainese site for more important news on this exciting new project in the next few days.

The leaders in the D-Challenge standings all maintained their leads at the top of the standings, even if they're starting to feel the heat from below: 38 t-shirts were awarded to D-Club members after the Catalunya GP race. Special compliments go to C.K. in Athens and Ro77 in Mandello del Lario, both of whom were able to pick all the winners in the right order!
