D-air® Street comprises two units, one on the bike and one on the rider

BIKE UNIT (M-Kit)

• - Accelerometer sensors on forks and frame
• - Central electronic control unit housing the hardware and triggering algorithm software
• - The sensor positions have been chosen to detect an impact as quickly as possible.

A bike-mounted central control unit:

• - Offers a more reliable system.
• - Provides the rider with a system for monitoring the status of the rider/pillion D-air® unit
• - Reduces the weight and size of the rider/pillion subsystem.

RIDER/PILLION UNIT (J-Kit)

• - Electronic system: radio system for bidirectional bike-to-rider/pillion data transmission and vice versa. Communicates constantly with the bike and triggers the D-air® system upon the occurrence of a recognised event.
• - Pneumatic system with 'cold' technology gas generators and 12L airbag with Dainese-patented 3D structure.

Tests carried out in accordance with draft european standard en 1621.3 for chest protectors show that d-air® street cuts the force transferred by over 92% compared with the specified limit.
The force on the back is reduced by 82% (compared with the performance of a level 2 back protector)

D-air® street is triggered in the event of:

- Impacts.
- Slides.


For rider and pillion

The Safety Integrity Levels SIL 1 and SIL 2 play an important role in the certification of the D-air® system. SIL 4 is the level required for the certification of nuclear power stations. These particularly stringent requirements regard the safety level of a system. SIL 1 regards effectiveness, while SIL 2 concerns non-interference.

To obtain SIL 2 certification, a system must be able to ensure a function failure rate of less than one for every 1,000 hours operation.

D-Tec® has been working on the D-air® project since 2000 and has acquired extensive experience:

• - In-depth tests on gas generators, airbags, software and hardware.
• - Extensive research and development on the ergonomics and comfort of the system.
• - Numerous tests by renowned certification organisations (TNO, MIRA, CIDAUT, TÜV, DEKRA).

Let's first examine what is meant by an airbag system's deployment time, just to make sure we are all on the same wavelength and no one is influenced by any misleading information.

Total intervention time = triggering time + inflation time

In a typical road accident, which generally involves a sudden impact, the dynamics of the accident require very short deployment times in the order of around 80 milliseconds.

Any system that has higher inflation times is worse than useless and could even be dangerous, since an airbag that reaches its maximum pressure after impact could cause further injuries.

Cable systems still have serious limitations from this standpoint today. Even the very fastest have insufficient deployment times, making them unable to protect the rider from the primary impact (which is the most violent) in typical road accidents.
